The Moon - Drew Adams

Created 3/22/09

As the moon shone down a bright new ray,
the whole world seemed to grin.
The sun was gone for an hour or two
and the stars sat low and dim.
The moon smiled and winked at the bright blue earth
and felt whole and full of life,
for the sun agreed to give him a chance
to prove his worth and might.
He glowed brighter as the minutes passed
and then went dim and low.
As he looked down to see the earth,
the life was sleeping down below.
The sun came up and saw the moon
and asked him what was wrong,
but all the moon could utter out was:
"I don't shine as bright or long.
When they see you they're full of life,
but with me they fall asleep.
Why should I stay when no one wants
a moon who's light it can not keep?"
The sun looked sad and whispered out:
"You must not understand.
They need you as much or more than me.
You give them hope for tomorrow's demands.
Your gentle glow relaxes them;
it's when you're gone they seem to cry;
and when you're up they all cheer
as if they can not die.
